What are you doing now that will get you the job you
want tomorrow? Your self-motivation shows by the actions you take today.
Read as much information as you can get your hands on about the industry
you are going into.
Join a professional organization. You will learn more about your field
and will have the opportunity to meet professionals who can become part
of your network. Take advantage of informational interviews.
Meet with the professionals at their offices to learn more about what
they do and their likes and dislikes about the industry. Always ask
about the mentors who have contributed to their careers. Volunteer
to write that PSA or design that brochure for a United Way agency.
You will not only help the agency but you will also be adding toyour
portfolio clips.
Show your future employer how much you want the job
by being proactive. Be self-motivated!
Newspaper Internship Survival Tips:
Ruben Rosario, Intern Coordinator with the St. Paul Pioneer Press shared
some valuable advice with Lisa Woods in a 2001 telephone interview…
If you come in cocky, better back it up. Be personable, even with newsroom
folks you may not like; be willing to learn and also accept constructive
criticism; make the extra phone call or legwork on a story; and don’t
hang around or have your work influenced by the perpetual disgruntled
newsroom types. Show up on time and dress appropriately. You represent
more than yourself when you’re working. You represent the paper
when you go on a story. Stay overtime on a story if you have to.
Don’t spread newsroom gossip, and don’t confide anything
that you are not willing to confront or acknowledge publicly if it comes
out. Romantic relations within newsrooms are strongly discouraged.
Finally, don’t pursue a story on someone’s beat without
letting your editor or that reporter know about it. But if you dig up
a story or exclusive on your own, fight to keep it and enlist mentors/supporters
to help .
